What is Thread Count in bedsheet?

Thread count is a measure of the number of threads (both horizontal and vertical) in one square centimeter or inch of fabric in bed sheets.  Some supplier may also count it in different units such as 10 cm square to get more threads. It is often used as an indicator of the sheet's quality and perceived softness and durability. The thread count is typically displayed as a two-number figure, with the first number representing the number of horizontal (weft) threads per square inch and the second number representing the number of vertical (warp) threads per square inch. For example, a sheet with a thread count of 300 might have 150 horizontal threads and 150 vertical threads per square inch.

It's a common misconception that a higher thread count always means better quality. For example, for Tencel, made from wooden usually can be counted 2000 above thread counts. While a high thread count can indicate a tightly woven fabric, it's not the sole factor in determining the quality of bed sheets. Other factors such as the type of cotton used, the weave, and the finish of the fabric also play a significant role in the feel and durability of the sheets.

In general, thread counts between 200 and 800 are considered standard for cotton sheets. Sheets with thread counts above 800 may not provide a substantial increase in comfort or quality and can sometimes be a marketing tricks. The type of cotton used, such as Egyptian cotton or Pima cotton, and the weave, like percale or sateen, can have a more significant impact on the feel and performance of the sheets.

It's essential to consider these factors along with thread count when choosing bed sheets.
